MARTIN THANING PETERSEN

Martin Thaning Petersen

Martin Thaning Petersen (b. 1972) is a composer, pianist, drummer, music journalist and artist, educated in musicology and art history in Copenhagen. As a composer, he is self-taught, supplemented by teaching by Flemming Friis and Jexper Holmen, among others. As a pianist he is taught by, among others, Alessandro Nobbio and Tonya Lemoh.

Production
Martin Thaning Petersen has written about 50 works for electronics, electroacoustics, solo piano, piano trio, wind trio, string quartets, sextet and choral music with his own lyrics. The tonal language ranges from tonality to free tonality, aleatorics and total noise.

Electroacoustics
Several electronics works are based on self-designed instruments, including the so-called "motor organ", which works by several engine mounts, each with its own sound, controlled by keyboard keys.

Electronics
Works for electronics composed with digital sounds mostly have titles that touch on abstract notions of technological phenomena. Here, melody and rhythms are avoided, and the music becomes organic and abstract.

Traditional instruments
The works for traditional instruments oscillate between minimalism and of a more virtuoso nature. In the pieces, few intervals are used to build motifs and chords, and each movement sticks to certain intervals.
