Rune Solvang

Rune Solvang (b. 1980) has been playing the piano since the age of five. He is educated at the Royal Danish Academy of Music in Copenhagen in piano by José Ribera and composition by Niels Rosing-Schow, Ejnar Kanding, and Bent Sørensen. He graduated in respectively 2006 and 2008.

Rune Solvang has written orchestral works and chamber music for various ensembles, as well as solo works for a large variety of instruments. In his works he cultivates espesially the intersection between avant-garde jazz, indie-rock and contemporary music. At times improvisation will appear in the works, and sometimes very complex or very simple and almost spiritual music. The world is a diverse patchwork of different cultures that are becoming increasingly available, and this is reflected in the music of Rune Solvang with stylistic contrasts. He is much concerned with political issues that is often underlying the works. In some works there are clear political or social critical messages.

Rune Solvang's music has been performed at festivals such as Nordic Music Days, Pulsar, and the Faroese festival Summartónar, and his orchestral works have been performed by Copenhagen Phil, South Jutland Symphony Orchestra, and The Danish Sinfonietta. He received the Composer Hakon Børresen and wife Nanna Børresen's grant in 2024.

As a pianist, Rune Solvang has played numerous concerts in Denmark and also in Germany, Sweden and Israel. He has also participated in masterclasses among others with Peter Feuchtwanger and in Tel Hai in Israel with Viktor Derevianko. In Israel he won the Sara Lahat Prize for best performance of a newly composed piece. In 2005 he awarded the Esther Vagning Memorial Grant and in 2006 he won the 1st price in the Academy's scholarship competition for pianists.
